I recently learned that my father was diagnosed with Barrett’s Esophagus. He’s suffered from acid reflux for many years, but this was still a surprise. Partially because I hadn’t really heard of Barrett’s Esophagus, but also because my father is actually a pretty healthy, strong man. So I am both trying to understand the relationship between GERD and Barrett’s Esophagus and come to grips with how my parents are aging.

You see, as my dad and mom grow older I grow more concerned with their declining health with each passing year. My mom and dad used to be such vital, healthy individuals. But now it seems when I visit home I learn about some new troubling development with either of their health care.

So because my father was recently diagnosed with Barrett’s Esophagus, I realized I needed to look into this matter so I can be more empowered and knowledgable when handling my parents’ changing health.

I learned that Barrett’s Esophagus is something probably more individuals may be suffering than realize it. While Barrett’s Esophagus itself isn’t necessarily deadly, it can often accompany more serious problems such as stomach cancer symptoms and it can be a precursor to cancer of the esophagus.

I also learned that Barrett’s Esophagus develops because of GERD. So if you think you might be experiencing early GERD Symptoms (like acid reflux or perhaps heartburn), I strongly suggest you start taking precautions now to secure your future health.
